Molecular Biologist (Environmental Surveillance)

Under the overall supervision of the WHO Representative, the incumbent is expected to undertake the Under the overall supervision of the WHO representative, the incumbent is expected to undertake the following duties at the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory for the Polio Eradication Initiative, Department of Virology, National Institute of Health, Islamabad:

  • Characterization and evolutionary tracking of viruses using molecular methods;
  • Development of dendograms of polioviruses and provide comments/feedback on molecular epidemiology to guide the field staff to take actions in targeted population/areas;
  • Share molecular sequencing data with global specialized laboratory and assist other WHO regions in the analysis of molecular sequencing data;
  • Develop plans for future needs of polio molecular biology laboratory according to the needs of polio eradication program;
  • Provide training in molecular methods to laboratory personnel within country and to the staff from WHO Polio Laboratory Network (PLN) including assistance to regional PLN and troubleshooting when-and-where needed;
  • Develop and establish molecular methods for the diagnosis of diseases of public health importance (eg. flu, dengue, measles, etc.);
  • Carry-out and coordinate research for polio end-game strategies in collaboration with other agencies and partners;
  • Quality control procedures in molecular methods;
  • Organization and participation to meetings;
  • Feedback on technical issues and report writing;
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor and/or WR.
