The end of Mardi Gras season means the end of king cakes for many local bakeries in town.
Atwood’s Bakery in Alexandria was selling the remaining pastries on Tuesday, as people tried to bring one last one home.
The staff at Atwood’s Bakery tells us that they’ve sold roughly 2,500 king cakes in store alone this season, another 600 people have ordered king cakes, and they have shipped nearly 550 king cakes around the country.
This year’s new flavor was cherry cream cheese.
“We just love that there are so many people willing to come to local businesses, whether it’s us or any other one as opposed to a king cake that’s shipped in from a grocery store chain or whatnot,” said Aaron Atwood with Atwood’s Bakery. “They’re looking for fresh baked ones from us or anybody else.”
The bakery closes at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, so you still have plenty of time to grab a king cake until they run out. After that, it will be special order for the next month.
