Organization seeks to halt hundreds of child sexual-abuse lawsuits going back decades and protect local scouting councils
In making its historic bankruptcy filing, the Boy Scouts of America halted hundreds of lawsuits over accusations of childhood sexual abuse going back decades and sought to protect its local scouting councils from facing those claims.

As one of the organization’s first requests after filing Tuesday for chapter 11 bankruptcy, it asked for a court order to prevent its 261 councils, and possibly churches and civic organizations that sponsor troops, from facing juries over alleged sexual abuse going back decades.
