Virginia just ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. Where does Vermont stand?

Virginia became the 38th state this week to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, joining Vermont in approving the proposal that would guarantee equal legal protection for women.

The Virginia vote could be pivotal, as 38 states are required to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment before the U.S. Constitution could be changed.

But ratification happened so slowly — Congress passed the ERA in 1972 and asked states to act by 1982 — that the fate of the Equal Rights Amendment is likely to be decided in court.
