Donald Trump called Justin Trudeau “tricky” after a hot-mic video caught the Canadian executive kidding about the U.S. president’s all-encompassing comments to journalists at a NATO summit this week.
“He’s deceitful,” Trump told columnists at a gathering with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday. “I see him as a pleasant person, yet in all actuality I got down on him about the way that he’s not paying 2% and I surmise he’s unsettled about it.”
A TV camera got Trudeau clearly kidding about Trump with France’s Emmanuel Macron and the U.K’s. Boris Johnson at a gathering on Tuesday. The U.S. president was absent.
Johnson asked Macron for what reason he had shown up later than expected to the gathering, and Trudeau contributed, saying, “He was late in light of the fact that he takes a 40-minute question and answer session off the top.”
The comment was an evident reference to Trump’s inclination for holding off the cuff news gatherings toward the start of his gatherings with different pioneers. Trump addressed columnists for over two hours joined on Tuesday before gatherings with NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg, Macron and Trudeau.
“You just watched his group’s jaws drop to the floor,” Trudeau included.
In his gathering with Trudeau, Trump examined the Canadian leader regarding how much his nation spends without anyone else protection. Canada doesn’t meet NATO’s objective for part nations to burn through 2% of their total national output on their militaries.
“What are you at? What is your number?” Trump inquired.
Trudeau attempted to sidestep noting straightforwardly, saying: “The number we talk about is a 70% expansion over these previous years. We are expanding fundamentally our resistance spending from past governments that cut it.”
In any case, Trump followed up. “Alright, where are you presently, regarding your number?”
After some discourse with a helper, Trudeau replied: “1.4.”
