Wonderful piece! My moderate/severe autistic son, a senior in High School, is poised to be the first student with “classical” autism in the Los Angeles Unified School District to graduate with an Academic Diploma as opposed to the dreaded Certificate of Completion given to his autistic peers who routinely forced into the “Special Day Class”. In this class at the age of 14 the students stop all academics, even if they are still not literate, and are given lessons in pushing a broom. By attending the public school every day with my son for 12 years I was able to keep him in academic classes and discovered that he could learn to read, write and do all the work. Last Spring he passed Algebra 2 exit exam. He cannot hold a conversation but he loves history and can play music on his cello from all times and places that he studies about. What was Geroge Washington’s daughter dancing to at parties during the 18th century? My son’s reports provided a musical backdrop for his fellow typical students studies.
I especially liked that you referenced Donald Trump as my son voted in his first American Presidental election last week. He was able to do so only because his father and I signed on to only 7 of the 8 conditions of conseveratorship. Refusing to sigh the provision that takes away his right to vote in american elections. Many parents do not know that they can still get conseveratorship for their child AND have their child keep their right to vote. In The U.S. if you cannot vote no one can protect your rights from the likes of a Donald Trump or worse.
